Marc Chagall biography in Biographies from the artzine on artrepublic.com

Marc Chagall is best known for his dreamlike paintings such as La Mariée that featured in the 1999 film Notting Hill. He was inspired by the Hasidic tradition and bible stories as well as his experiences growing up in Russia.

After his marriage lovers and romance also became a recurring theme in his paintings. Chagall's paintings show elements of cubism and use strong colours and imagery. He also produced set and costume designs along with striking stained glass windows.

Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia in 1887. He travelled to Paris in 1910 and was influenced by the various avant-garde artists he encountered there. He returned to Russia during the Revolution and worked for the party in his home town of Vitebsk and in Moscow. In 1923 he returned to Paris and in 1937 he became a French Citizen. He was however forced to leave France and move to the USA with the outbreak of WWII. Returning to France in 1948 he continued his work focusing in this period more on large scale often public works. He died in 1985.
