Gustav Klimt biography in Biographies from the artzine on artrepublic.com

‘The Kiss’ is probably Gustav Klimt’s best known work. The mosaic patterned robe, rich texture and colour and use of gold leaf in the composition convey a sense of both passion and wealth.

Frequently commissioned to paint portraits Klimt was fascinated with the female form. His female subjects are depicted as a subject of mystery and intense sensuality often in a variety of abstract themes.

Klimt was born in Vienna in 1862, the eldest son of seven children. Early in his career he became known as a painter of elaborate decorative interiors. He moved away form this as he became inspired by the Impressionist, Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements. Gustav Klimt died of a stroke on February 6, 1918 in Vienna.
