Eric Ravilious biography in Biographies from the artzine on artrepublic.com

Eric Ravilious was an outstanding artist, designer and illustrator and is now one of the most popular British artists of the 1930’s. His early works depicted the countryside around him in the south east of England, as well as urban scenes of London. Many of his works are seen as capturing a sense of Englishness that existed between the wars.

As an Official Wartime Artist he produced famous works detailing ships, aircraft and coastal defences, many of which have been exhibited at the Imperial War Museum in London.

Ravilious was born in 1903 in Eastbourne. He studied art at the Royal College of Art under Paul Nash. Here he met fellow artist Edward Bawden who became a life-long friend. Ravilious was a painter of watercolours and murals, a book illustrator in wood engraving and lithography, and a designer of transfer-ware pottery. The life of Eric Ravilious was tragically cut short, by a flying accident near Iceland in 1942.
