Well known works include his series of animals in formaldehyde including a Shark and a cow and her calf, his ‘spot’ and ‘spin’ paintings, and installations such as Pharmacy. Hirsts works often court controversy such as his most recent piece ‘For the Love of God’ which was a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with diamonds. Damien Hirst was a prominent member of the ‘Young British Artists’ (or YBAs) who rose to fame during the 1990’s and were seen as part of the wider Brit pop cultural movement. He gained institutional acclaim in 1995 when he won the Tuner prize. Many of his early works were bought by leading modern art collector Charles Saatchi.
