He was a gifted academic and a man with strong radical tendencies, being a committed anarchist his whole life. In 1961 Rothko was given a major retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After a life of severe depression Mark Rothko tragically committed suicide in his studio, aged 67.
